Recycling Center
La Moran, Caracas Venezuela
2010
Currently waste management in La Morán represents a serious contamination problem as well as a public health threat to the community. It is the result of poor waste management practices that are aggravated by the lack of internal roads necessary for conventional garbage truck trash collection. Each inhabitant must take his waste to distant containers, allowing laziness to motivate the formation of more conveniently located clandestine waste dumps within the slum. Given the significant volume of trash produced on a daily basis, a sound alternative would be to recycle some of this waste taking into account that often up to 70% of trash can be reused. This activity requires the construction of a recycling center which has been located on the Avenida Morán so that it may receive and sell recyclable materials. The center will be operated by a youth cooperative financed with income generated from the sale of materials and contributions paid by each community member. The cooperative will be in charge of collecting recyclable waste from every house and take it to the center thus helping to avoid the formation of future informal waste dumps.
