Copernico Boulevard
Las Mercedes - Caracas, Venezuela
2022
The Copernico Boulevard proposal comprises a series of interventions to transform what is currently a four lane Avenue into a boulevard. the project focuses its attention on pedestrianization by increasing the width of sidewalks, additional and improved crosswalks that are safe and accessible. Landscape interventions incorporate a system of bioswales that not only helps to mitigate the accumulation of rainwater that is a particularly acute issue in Las Mercedes, but also contributes to replenish water in the aquifers, and create a cooler microclimate. It can also absorb street noise. Finally, the road is raised to be continuous with the sidewalks, allowing crossings to be level, without the need to introduce ramps. Street bollards define the separation between roadway and sidewalks, referencing the strategy used in the nearby Plaza Alfredo Sadel.
The Copernico Boulevard project represents the first phase of a larger intention for the streets surrounding the Plaza Alfredo Sadel. The streets Trinidad, Mucuchies, Londres and the main avenue of Las Mercedes can adopt the pavement language, bioswales, vegetation and urban furniture developed in this project. The proposed interventions reflect the intensified comercial and entertainment uses occuring in the neighborhood of Las Mercedes which require increased access to public space, improvement of pedestrian conditions and accessibility, as well as greater control over the presence of automobiles and the abusive parking practices that occur on sidewalks and streets.
