Picapiedra, Baruta - Caracas
2023
For many years, residents of the self-built neighborhood Picapiedra, adjacent to Piedra Azul, have been reserving a sliver of land along the main road in the hopes that it becomes a park one day. When we learned about their intentions and saw the inventory of swings and slides they already had, we were excited to join forces with them and help make their intentions concrete. We began by surveying and measuring the site. Then we put together a coherent proposal, based on their thoughts and projections. The park is composed of several elements that use recycled, simple and available materials such as bamboo steel profiles and concrete.
The western edge of the park caters to children, with several swing sets, a slide, and a covered area with benches for birthdays and other celebrations. The eastern end consists of a series of roof structures to provide shade, along with concrete tables and benches for a local chess club to use in the evening. Between them monkey bars and a steel climbing structure are for both children and adults. The roof structures are made of bamboo, and create a dynamic striated pattern as they provide shade. The space can also be used for community meetings, health operations, and traveling markets. The park was inaugurated on Saturday July 20th, 2024.
