This year´s Wallenberg Symposium at the University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture focused on equity in architectural education through mentorship. Elisa Silva, in representation of FIU, was among the invited panelists together with Andrew Chin of Florida A&M University, Edmund Akima Brackeen from IIT, Bradford Grant of Howard University, Coleman Jordan from Morgan State University, Stephanie Pilat from the University of Oklahoma and Carmina Sánchez at Hampton University among others. It took place at the Ann Arbor campus on January 30, 2023.

The French Ambassador in Venezuela Romain Nadal visits the Casa de Todos Annex in La Palomera

The Ambassador Romain Nadal visits La Palomera to celebrate the culmination of the rainwater collection project in the Annex of the Casa de Todos, Wednesday October 27, 2021. The Ambassador gave certificates to the people from the community who attended the technical workshops led by Lata de Agua. The collection system was financed by the French Embassy in Venezuela, and the project was executed by the Asociación CAUCE and Enlace Fundación.

Lecture by Elisa Silva within the framework of the Expedition '21 studio of the Institute of Architecture in Porto Portugal, whose focus this year is “Critical neighborhoods: Architecture and appropriation in Bairro do Leal." The workshop seeks to present a set of regeneration strategies in the precarious territory of Bairro do Leal, in Porto, demonstrating the capacity of architecture to improve the living conditions of inhabitants. The exhibition includes the work, experiences and lessons of the Integration process Caracas program that began in the informal settlement La Palomera in November 2018. Its objective has been to invite all citizens to get to know La Palomera through its culture, its sancochos (a Venezuelan stew), its spaces and its people. Audiences are also invited to question the negative stigma that exist with respect to the barrio and to see it with a renewed gaze, so that it may be discovered, understood and recognized as a living and vital place for the city.

Enlace Foundation and Fospuca begin door to door waste collection in La Palomera

Today, October 3, 2019, Fospuca began a door-to-door waste collection program in La Palomera, Baruta, employing people from the community with the institutional support of the City of Baruta and the social accompaniment of Enlace Foundation. The initiative provides barrio inhabitants with a better-quality service and will eliminate the presence of containers in the entrances of the informal settlement. It represents a pilot project that will be replicated in other sectors of the municipality such as El Placer de María, Ojo de Agua, Las Minas, Santa Cruz and Hoyo de la Puerta.

"Integration Process Caracas" promotes the recognition of the entire city by blurring borders, overstepping boundaries and generating opportunities for gatherings where we can experience integration.
We invite artists, creators and city lovers to participate in a co-creation experience with the community of La Palomera, Baruta. We are looking for people interested in working through a constant exchange with La Palomera´s neighbors to create interventions that manifest reflections on integration through art.

First phase completed for the public space project in Las Brisas de la Palomera

Enlace Foundation ended the first part of a public space project in Las Brisas La Palomera over the month of December, culminating the construction of a 19 meters long bench that lines the edge of pronounced topographical drop off at the top of La Palomera´s southern ridge. In order to create this new playground for children, neighbors who had parked their cars in this space graciously agreed to park their cars elsewhere in order to allow a new public space to be built. For security reasons the community and design team agreed to build the bench first as a protection device to keep children away from the edge. In January 2019 we will begin the construction of the swings.

Integration Process Caracas - Art, Pedagogy and the City

On November 17 we kicked off the "Integration Process Caracas" program with the first talk of the lecture series "Art, Pedagogy and the City". The lecture entitled "Strategies for Integration" brought together a diverse group of speakers who addressed issues related to urban integration such as the real and symbolic merging of the city and the distinction between "formal" and "informal" cities. The meeting took place in the La Palomera´s basketball court where Natalya Critchley, Cheo Carvajal, Elisa Silva, Sergio Dos Santos, Martina Arteaga and José González told us about integration experiences related to art, pedagogy, urban design and local experiences. The lecture was attended by neighbors from the community of La Palomera and other parts of the city. At the end of the presentations everyone participated in a workshop experience led by Katiuska Camargo, who invited them to dream as children and imagine transformations for the community. This initiative is part of the United States Embassy in Venezuela´s cultural program.

Enlace Foundation will begin work on a new playground in Las Brisas La Palomera, in Caracas

On Sunday the community of Las Brisas in La Palomera, Baruta - Caracas, conducted an open assembly to vote on a playground and park. In early July, we proposed building a public space under a large mature possumwood “jabillo” where neighbors currently park cars to the community. Over a series of meeting the design changed and was strengthened by their concerns for security and flexibility. After a heated debate and a certain amount of tension, the community overwhelmingly voted for the park and so we will begin work in the coming weeks. We are looking forward to this new experience with the community of Las Brisas.

During the fall 2018 semester, Elisa will be teaching an option studio titled “The Agency of Mezcal in the Oaxaca Valley of Mexico” at Harvard University Graduate School of Design. The studio addresses the environmental, social and economic aspects that surround the growing opportunities for mezcal production in the Oaxaca Valley. Findings could serve as a thoughtful inquiry to guide the potential agency of mezcal in the region with viable holistic strategies.

“Antimano – Catholic University Andres Bello – Live cartography”

Enlace Arquitectura was invited to participate in the project "Antimano - Catholic University Andres Bello - Live Cartography" with the exhibition "CABA Cartography of the Caracas barrios 1966-2014". The exhibition is open to the public during the month of March 2017 in the Experimental Hall of the Catholic University Andres Bello Cultural Center and includes a series of municipal maps and a large scale satellite map of Caracas (12.0 x 5.5 meters) at 1:5,000 scale, that shows the slum areas. Slums account for 4,470 hectares and the equivalent of 24% of the entire urban territory. 1.449.055 inhabitants live there, which is 45% of the Caracas population.

Integration in Process Caracas Second Meeting

The Second Gathering of the series "Art, pedagogy and city", titled "Art as a mediation tool," took place on Saturday February 9, 2019. Artists, creators, journalists and neighbors of Caracas walked from the Plaza Bolívar de Baruta to the La Cruz sector in La Palomera. At the end a performance was coreographed for the guests in the "Vuelta de los jeeps" a public space, led by dancer Dora Peña.

Inauguration Plaza Jorge Somaca in Chapellin
2018
After twenty weeks of work through the phases of community consultations, participatory design and construction, the Chapellin Plaza was inaugurated with the participation of neighbors and visitors. This project was funded by the Swiss Embassy in Venezuela through an alliance with Caracas MiConvive, an NGO focused on empowering and supporting communities in Caracas. Enlace Arquitectura led design and construction efforts together with local associations such as Asociación de Jóvenes Unidos AJU and the Don Bosco de Chaplain pre-school. A uniform pavement over 280 m2 of surface allow children and youth to play baseball, soccer and ride bikes. It has also been used for community festivities over the holiday season revealing an immediate appropriation of the renewed public space by neighbors. The public space was named Plaza Jorge Somaca after the leader of the association AJU, who sadly passed days before the project was completed.

Studio final review “The Agency of Mezcal in the Oaxaca Valley”

Final review for the work of students in Harvard University Graduate School of Design “The Agency of Mezcal in the Oaxaca Valley” option studio led by Elisa Silva, was presented on the 10th of December 2018 in front of a multidisciplinary jury comprised of professors Diane Davis, chair of the GSD´s Department of Urban Planning and Design; Aziza Chaouni, associate professor at Daniel´s Univeristy of Toronto; Juan José Consejo, president of INSO in Oaxaca; Pablo Perez Ramos, assistant professor in Landscape Architecture GSD; Alistair McIntoch, Landscape architect and lecturer at the GSD; Steven Handel, ecologist and lecturer at the GSD; Miquel Adriá, director of Arquine in Mexico; Anna Heringer, architect and design critic GSD; Guilllermo Chavez in representation of Agave Capital and Bruxo Mezcal. Students developed proposals for the towns of San Martín Lachilá, Agua del Espino and San Agustín Amatengo in the Ejutla region of Oaxaca Mexico. The approaches considered reforestation strategies, water harvesting, public space, agave harvesting, wood production, the inclusion of women in new productive activities and expanding the management of mezcal related activities to include more ecologically sustainable strategies as well as new components of terroir.

Inauguration of the Church San Juan María Vianney in Media Legua
2018
The new church of Media Legua San Juan Maria Vianney was inaugurated (consecrated) by the Vargas State Bishop and the last four parish priests including Father Abelardo Bazó, who stood behind the church’s construction from the very beginning. Ricardo Silva, and Elisa Silva led the design and construction together with Rafael Monterrey and his family. Carlos Mero was responsible for the opening gates and lettering on the façade. The idea to build a church at the selected site initiated in April 2008 when the community approached Father Abelardo and presented their request. All materials have been purchased through donations and much of the work has been done pro bono. There are several details yet to be completed, but the church is functional and operative as of this moment.

The Asian School of Architecture and Design Innovation ASADI in Cochin India has invited an international and nationa group of prominent architects and cultural figures to form the schoo´s governance board. The shared vision is to build a renewed approach to design education that is committed to both social and environmental engagement in built ecologies. Board members include Sunil Dubey, Sheila Prakash, Sharukh Mistry, Chris Johnson, Navina Jackson and Elisa Silva. They met for several days in Cochin, India to learn about the school and suggest possible future initiatives.

We are pleased to communicate that Enlace Arquitectura and MiConvive have started a new collaboration to support communities in El Cardon - Antímano, La Hoyada - La Vega and Chapellín build new public spaces. The process entails a very close relationship with the community through didactic games focused on building awareness about the role and importance of public space. Design workshops allow community members to share their thoughts, desires and opinions about the space, and their continued involvement during the construction phase ensures appropriation and builds a sense of responsibility. We are very honored and excited to begin this new challenge.

Biñ Yu Initiative

Founding of the Biñ Yu Initiative in Mexico to support communities in rural areas of the Oaxaca Central Valley Region to gain empowerment through participatory workshops to improve their livelihood and the sustainability of their environmental conditions. These areas are typically plagued by extended drought seasons and diminished productivity due to the scarcity of water. However, in fact Oaxaca receives considerable amounts of yearly rain in comparison to other regions of Mexico.

Enlace Arquitectura togetherwith Citibank Venezuela and FUDEP are supporting 6 communities in Venezuela in the cities of Caracas, Valencia and Maracaibo totranform their urban environments into desirable and useful publicspaces. Through engagement in workshops, public space making eventsand participation in a competition for seed funding, comunnities acquire skills on how to formulate their own projects, how topresent them to their municipalities and how to take on selfmotivated urban transformation projects.

Elisa presented a lecture atthe BEA Gallery of the Paul L. Cejas School of Architecture at FIUon the content of her research for the Wheelwright Prize shereceived from Harvard GSD in 2011, and has continued to evolvesince then. The presentation identifies approximations to formulate public space through environmental strategies, infrastructure, pavement, buildings and activities as well as investment approachesto create public space interventions in informal settlements of Latin American cities.
